The Gundalow Company, located in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, is a non-profit organization that strives to inspire individuals to take responsibility and become better stewards of our maritime region. The company provides educational opportunities based on appreciating the river systems and understanding the need for protection and action.
If you are unfamiliar as to what a gundalow is, it is a shallow drafted type of cargo barge, once common in the Gulf of Maine's rivers and estuaries. The Piscataqua gundalow began as a simple undecked barge, first appearing in the mid 1600s, powered or rowed with long oars. Since 2002, the Gundalow Company has used Captain Edward H. Adams - a replica modeled after the last gundalow to carry cargo on the bay, to provide dockside programs to more than 100,000 visitors. Due to the fact that the older gundalow is too authentic to comply with modern U.S. Coast Guard safety requirements, a new one is in constrcution. Our new gundalow under construction can be seen daily 11 am-5pm at Strawbery Banke in Portsmouth, NH. Tours are free with membership or entrance ticket at Strawbery Banke’s Tyco Visitor Center off Hancock Street.- Cost:
